Google Pay for Senior Citizen

Accessibility | Trust | Simplicity | Independence

Background of the Challenge

My parents were visiting me in Bangalore. They use smartphones daily. They message, watch videos, search online.

But at a street vendor, while paying with Google Pay…They paused. Not confused.Just unsure.

That hesitation started this journey.

Why This Problem Matters

60+

aged people are defined as senior citizens in India.

9.7%

means 149 M current senior citizen as per the 2023 survey.

20.8%

means 347 M, Projected senior citizen population by 2050.

In future, proportion of senior citizen will increase because,

  • People are living longer due to better healthcare, sanitation, and nutrition.
  • Birth rates are falling, so the younger population grows more slowly.
  • India is in the final stage of demographic transition (low birth + low death).
  • Long-term treatments help people manage chronic illnesses and live longer.
  • Urbanization and lifestyle changes lead to smaller families, increasing the elderly proportion.

India is entering an aging digital future. This is not edge UX. This is mainstream UX.

Problem Statement

How might we help senior citizens make digital payments with confidence, clarity, and security across different comfort levels with technology?
